A Typical Sunday
Welcome to our service!
Arriving: Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions when you arrive. Someone will greet you at the door and show you the way to worship. Upstairs an usher will offer you a Sunday bulletin, which has the order of worship that we will follow that day. We try to choose language and music for worship that welcomes everyone. Find a seat and make yourself comfortable. You will also find a "Newcomer" card for you to fill out and place in the offering plate if you would like us to be in touch with you.
Infants and Toddlers: First Church has childcare available with a designated adult if you would like to drop off your little one before the service. The childcare room is on the 2nd floor. Your child is also welcome in the service. There is a video feed in the child care room which carries the service if at any time you feel you would like to accompany your child to the childcare room.
Children's time and classes for ages 3 to grade 6: Early in the service all of the children are invited to come forward for a time that is set aside for them. Sometimes there is a story. Sometimes the children assist with a baptism or welcoming new members. Parents are welcome to come forward with their children if that makes them more comfortable.
From September through June, children can leave worship following the children's time for a Community Time downstairs, followed by age appropriate groups. During the summer, we offer one broadly graded group (with no classes in August). Parents are encouraged, if they would like, to take their child to class or childcare, and then return to worship once they are settled. Children are also welcome in the service if they are not ready to attend a group.
Communion: For most of the year, we celebrate Communion on the first Sunday of the month. During Lent we celebrate Communion every Sunday and on Maundy Thursday. Everyone, members, non-menbers and visitors, is invited to participate. Usually the ushers will serve you in the pew, passing trays of bread and trays of cups. We eat and drink together, after all have been served, as a sign of our unity in Christ. There is a rack on the pew in front of you for your empty glass. Sometimes we invite everyone to come forward to receive. We offer wine and grape juice. Gluten Free crackers are also available.
Special Events: Sometimes there are special events, such as baptisms, welcoming new members and presentations. These will be printed in your bulletin and you can follow along with the rest of the congregation.
After the Service: Both the pastors and the people in our congregation would love to meet you following worship. The pastors greet folks at the doors following the service. Everyone is invited for coffeehour downstairs after worship. Just follow the crowd. Be sure to sign the Guest Book near the door or fill out a "newcomer card" located in each pew and place it in the offering plate, hand it to an usher or a pastor. We would also be glad to meet with you during coffeehour to register children for church school or answer your questions.
